Kashmir, a multi-faceted hill state is truly a crown jewel when it comes to tourist destinations. It is surrounded by two major Himalayan ranges, the Great Himalayan range and the Pir Panjal range that are source of great rivers which flow into tranquil lakes and beautiful valleys forested with orchards.

Fondly called as the ‘Paradise on Earth’ by the Mughals, Jammu Kashmir is always extravagantly beautiful in all the four seasons. In summer and spring tourists can enjoy the pleasing natural vistas, Blue Mountains, honey dewed orchards whereas in winter tourists can indulge in Skiing, Tobogganing, sledge-riding etc.

The Mughals also patronized arts and crafts among the Kashmiri people. As a result, Kashmiri people have developed the artisanship to create a treasure trove of handicrafts and gift items.

Areas in Jammu Kashmir

Amarnath
  • Amarnath is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites perched at an altitude of 4175 mts. Tucked away in the mighty Himalayas, Amarnath enshrines a natural Shivling, made of ice. The destination has derived its name from Amar, which means Immortal and Nath, which means God.
  • According to a legend, Lord Shiva was asked by Parvati to tell her the secret of immortality. In order to keep the mystery of creation as a secret from any form of life on earth, he chose this isolated place.
  • The popular belief is that it was here at the holy cave of Amarnath that lord Shiva narrated to Parvati about the mysteries behind the creation. Two mating doves accidentally heard this heavenly conversation and the devotees believe that these doves were born again and again and made the cave as their perpetual abode.
Gulmarg (Gulamarg)
  • Gulmarg is located in the Baramulla District of Jammu and Kashmir at at an altitude of 2730 m. It is surrounded by forested hills and meadows, snow-capped peaks, deep ravines and valleys.
  • The slopes near Gulmarg, varying between heights of 8,700 and 10,500 ft, make it the only heli ski-ing resort in Asia and the highest ski-ing location in India. The most popular activity here is skiing, as well as the cable car ride.
Jammu
  • Renowned as city of temples with attractive surroundings, Jammu is located at the foot hills of great Himalayas and is the winter capital of the state Jammu and Kashmir. The city, which figured in ancient epic Mahabharata, was named first as Jamboo, but later it has become Jammu.
  • Jammu city is known for its ancient temples, imposing palaces and historically renowned places. Adventure sports are the main characteristic of this amazing city. Adorned with beautiful gardens, lakes, hillocks, snowy mountains the land of temples is a must see place in India.
Kargil
  • Kargil is the second largest town in the region of Ladakh. Kargil lies on the border region adjoining Pakistan in the Himalayan mountain ranges. The name of Kargil has been derived from the combination of two words – Khar standing for Castle and Kil meaning center.
  • The destination is famous for its valleys, small towns, monasteries, rural villages and shrines. The place is indeed a heaven for adventure seekers as they can enjoy adventurous activities such as trekking and mountaineering. Kargil also host archery contest during the month of May.
Ladakh
  • Ladakh, popularly known as 'the Moon Land', 'Little Tibet', and 'the last Shangri La' is one of the most popular tourist destinations. The region of Ladakh, has Leh as its capital city. The places of Alchi, Nubra Valley, Hemis, Lamayuru, Zanskar Valley, Kargil, Pangong Tso, Tso Kar & Tso Moriri are part of the Ladakh region.
  • Ladakh is one of those places with unparalleled beauty of its barren stretches of land, lush green patches, gurgling streams & rivers, nestled in the midst of large expanses of snow capped mountains of the majestic Himalaya's.
Pahalgam
  • Astounding for the mesmerizing natural beauty, Pahalgam valley is located at the confluence of Lidder River and the streams originating from serene Sheshnag Lake. The valley is in Anantnag district.
  • The valley offers breathtaking panoramic views of the beautiful Himalayan Ranges. Pahalgam is the base camp for the renowned pilgrimage to Amarnath and also a famous shopping place for woolen products.
Sonamarg (Sonmarg)
  • Sonamarg is a popular hill station located at an altitude of 2740 mts. The city lies before the Zoji La pass. The name Sonamarg means ‘Meadow of Gold’. This name was given to the place as it is completely covered with a sheet of flowers during spring.
  • Sonamarg is the last stop of Kashmir that leads to the driveway from Srinagar to Leh. Trekking and hiking are quite popular here. Sonamarg is also popular for its walkways out of which the major attraction is the 4 km route to Thajiwas.
Srinagar
  • Located in the heart of the Kashmir Valley, which is called 'Paradise on Earth', Srinagar’s landscape is interspersed with greenery, lakes and hillocks. The city is spread out along the banks of the Jhelum River and is famous for its surrounding natural beauty and postcard tourist spots.
  • Srinagar has a complex cultural fabric. The many historical constructions and places of worship are long-standing evidences of the historical unity. UNESCO has recognised some of these famous buildings of the city as heritage sites. Srinagar is also a place for trekking and hiking.
  • Another significant attraction of Srinagar is the Tulip Festival, which is organised annually from April 5 to 15 every year.
Vaishno Devi (Vashnodevi)
  • One of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in the country and a revered site for Hindus, Vaishno Devi is located in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir. The hills of Vaishno Devi are home to the famous Mata Vaishno Devi Temple.
  • Located at an altitude of 5200 feet above sea level and at a distance of approximately 14 kilometres from Katra, this is the second most visited religious site in the country. To visit the shrine one has to trek up the mountains. The original cave is quite narrow and takes time to reach the Sanctum Sanctorum.
